So me and my gang just finished a lake test on a used 400TF I picked up a month ago. Observation is that the boat runs fine overall, but it starts porpoising at mid speed even with the trim almost completely down. We tried a different prop and adjusted the weight balance. Nothing happened. I'm confused because the dealer mentioned it would do me good adding a whale tail, but I've been reading that Smart Tabs might work better. How can I smooth this out?

What you're looking for are smart tabs. They help keep the boat in the necessary orientation, help with economy and most importantly helps with proposing. The tail works, but only when you're going for high speeds.
Whale tails are band-aids and Smart Tabs are actual solutions. If your 400TF is porpoising even with trim down and weight adjusted, it's a hull balance issue not something a bolt-on wing will truly fix. Tabs change behavior; tails just mask bad setup.
